The importance of loving and valuing your children in all seasons and circumstances
In our role as parents, it is crucial to recognize the value and blessing of each child, regardless of gender. In today’s society, some parents still express disappointment when they have multiple children of the same gender, especially girls. However, as Muslims, our faith teaches us to welcome each child as a blessing from God and to love them equally.
The Teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) showed us, by his example, how important it is to love and value our children, regardless of gender. He always treated his daughters with immense love, honoring and respecting them. Fatima, his beloved daughter, is a shining example of the importance he gave to girls. He said of her:
“Fatima is a part of me. What angers her angers me, and what pleasesu her pleases me.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also taught that those who raise girls with love and patience will be rewarded with Paradise. He said:
“Whoever takes care of two girls until they reach adulthood, he and I will be like that in Paradise.” (putting his two fingers together to show closeness).
These words show how girls are a blessing and a source of reward for parents.
Valuing Every Child, in Every Season
Parenting is about being a refuge and guide for our children, come rain or shine. Each season of life brings its challenges, but also its opportunities to strengthen family bonds.
• In winter, let us offer our children warmth and comfort, teaching them the importance of gratitude for the blessings we have.
• In spring, let us encourage their growth, creativity and curiosity, just as nature renews itself.
• In the summer, let’s take advantage of moments of joy and freedom to build their self-confidence and teach them to appreciate the beauty of life.
• In the fall, let’s teach them to accept changes and prepare for the challenges ahead, while reminding them that we are always there for them.
Appreciating Children, Regardless of Gender
Society can sometimes put unfair pressure on parents, making them believe that some children (like boys) are more precious than others. However, every child, boy or girl, has a unique value and an important role to play in family life and society.
Personally, as a mother of three beautiful girls, I can testify that every day with them is a blessing. They teach me patience, unconditional love, and strength. Children, regardless of gender, are a light in our lives.
